Basic Rules of Ultimate

You can find the offical rules to ultimate on Ultimate Players Association Web site  http://www2.upa.org/ultimate/rules/rules.shtml. To really enjoy the game of Ultimate we recommend you get to know the rules.

However we've compiled a top ten rules list to assist you with your understanding of the sport. Still have questions - come out to the scheduled drop-in ultimate and we can discuss the rules with you.

1. Spirt of the Game - Ultimate is all about spirit and respecting the other players. There are no referees in ultimate and it is up to you as a player to know the rules and adhere to them.

2. The Pull - To start a point a player from the opposing team throws the disc to the opposing team, that is called a pull. The disk on the pull is allowed to hit the ground and that is where you start play from. In fact if you try to catch the pull and drop it the disk automatically becomes the possession of the team that threw the pull. If the pull goes out of bounds then you bring it inbounds in accordance with the offical rules.

3. Out of Bounds - the field is inbounds the lines are out of bounds.

4. Turnovers - you lose possession of the disc if:

  • your check has reached a stall 10 count.
  • your team member doesn't catch your throw
  • your check hand blocks your throw
  • you throw the disk to yourself

5. Travelling - Once you catch the disc you must stop running and establish a pivot foot. If your pivot foot leaves the ground you have travelled.

6. Marking - If you are marking or checking someone with the disc you start counting with Stall one and then count up to ten. You can not stop the thrower from moving on his or her pivot foot or from throwing with your arms or legs. You must be a disk space away from your check. Only one person is allowed to guard the thrower.

7. Picks - Picks are not allowed in ultimate. If someone obstructs your ability to stay with your mark you can call a pick.

8. Fouls - Ultimate is a non-contact sport however accidents happen and you may have contact with someone during the game. You can call a foul on yourself or the person you had contact with may call a foul. There are various incidences where a foul may occur, see the offical rules for more information regarding fouls.

9. Thrower - the thrower is the person that is in possession of the disc. If the disc has gone out of bounds the thrower walks  to the last know spot the disc was inbounds and play starts from there. The thrower can wait for their mark to tap the disk in and start the stall counts or the thrower can tap the disk to the ground if their check is not there and call out disk in play.

10. Scoring - When you catch the disc in the end zone that is a point for your team.
